Dadas las "diabólicas" características de Kai Tak se estableció en la parte final de la aproximación a la pista 13 (la más habitual) un sistema llamado IGS (Instrument Guidance System) en lugar del habitual ILS. Gracias al IGS el avión "sorteaba" la colina (Checkerboard Hill) y viraba a la derecha para conseguir alinearse a la pista 13
