Entrando en pista 13 del viejo Kai Tak para despegue en una mañana muy nubosa. JAL operó 10 MD-11 entre 1993 y 2005 tanto para vuelos en Asia como saltos más largos (p.ej. Londres). Los denominó J-Bird y cada uno llevaba pintado una especie diferente de pájaro. Fueron entregados a Boeing como parte del pago de nuevos B763 y B777, que los convirtió en cargueros para ser posteriormente vendidos a UPS.
