No tan exitoso como sus rivales Caravelle y DC-9, el One eleven fue durante un cierto tiempo el reactor medio utilizado por compañías británicas. Realizó su primer vuelo el 20 de agosto de 1963 entrando en servicio el 9 de abril de 1965. Se construyeron 233 ejemplares aunque posteriormente fue cedida su construcció a Rumania.
