El primer modelo realmente VTOL desarrollado en la URSS fué el Yak-36, presentado en público en 1967 y denominado "Freehand" por la OTAN. Se construyeron 4 aparatos de los cuales solo 2 llegaron a volar. Uno de ellos se puede ver en el museo de la Fuerza Aerea Rusa en Monino.
